Discussions on art, artists, and their social situations started during this exhibition, continued and expanded to include visitors to the show, like Camille Pissarro and his son LucienSignac and Seurat. He returned to incorporating the darker colors from the beginning of his career and Starry Night is a wonderful example of that shift.
The artist restricted his first drawings to a black and white palette, believing mastery of this discipline to be essential before attempting works in color.

That is a pretty story, all made up. The Starry Night belongs to this latter series,  as well as to a small series of nocturnes he initiated in Arles. At first, both artists enjoyed a prolific period in their careers, but disagreements and arguments tainted the productive tenor of their visit.
While there's no denying the popularity of Starry Night, it's also interesting to note that there is very little known about Vincent's own feelings toward his work.

No matter what Joseph did he could not receive the acceptance or respect of his 11 older brothers. It's difficult to say. While that is uncertain, it is possible that Van Gogh identifies himself with the looming cypress tree in the foreground of the painting, a plant that, like daffodils, recurs in several of his paintings, including Wheat Field with Cypresses, also painted in Nature could even be attributed to the divine in this work.
